In 1998 Dodd Paterson + Bukowski Rehm Architects Limited were commissioned to design a high performance sports and aquatic centre associated with the existing Sovereign Stadium on Aucklands North Shore for North Shore athletics, swimming and water polo Community Sports Club.
In 2009 Stage 2 commenced on the new Millennium Centre. The multi sports complex incorporates Olympic Swimming Pool, Learner Pool, Therapy and Spa Pools, Multi Purpose Sports Hall, Sporting Library, Café, Restaurant, and Multiple Change Rooms at Sovereign Stadium. Sports science laboratories, gyms, a heavy weight training area, sport medicine clinic and administration area will support these resources. Hospitality facilities include conference rooms, teaching and career support management, café, restaurant and retail outlets.
Innovative air handling strategies were implemented to reduce energy and maintenance costs, and another significant feature is natural day lighting with many swimmers commenting on how pleasant this is not withstanding the additional energy saving benefits.
A 40-bed sports lodge capable of accommodating team groups or individuals has been constructed to the south of the centre while a new Grandstand to the Sovereign Stadium is included in the Millennium Institute Building.
