Architecture, a craft entwined with the essence of local context and culture, is not merely about erecting structures but about weaving stories of communities, traditions, and innovation. Recently, the NZIA In:Situ Conference illuminated key insights into the evolving landscape of architecture, resonating with the ethos of empowering local craftsmanship and embracing environmental stewardship. Let’s delve into the key takeaways from the event.
Cultural Integration and Trust in Craftsmanship
Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre of Barclay & Crousse highlighted the importance for architects to champion the integration of local craft and culture into architectural endeavors. They highlighted the necessity of regaining trust in contractors and craftsmen, lamenting the erosion of this trust in regulatory processes. Their relocation from Paris to Peru reflects a pursuit to rekindle this symbiotic relationship between architects and artisans.
Environmental Consciousness and Sustainable Design
A recurring theme throughout the conference was the urgency for architects to prioritise environmental sustainability. Oliver Wainwright’s critique of global commercial-driven architecture illustrated the importance of reusing existing buildings and materials. Architects were encouraged to think outside the box, considering how structures could be repurposed or “grafted” to adapt to new uses. This sentiment was echoed by Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang , emphasising the need for solutions that minimise environmental impact while catering to human needs. “Exciting design solutions can emerge when we extend the life of structures and find new possibilities for their future,” says Jeanne.
Innovative Design Approaches
From Kai-Uwe Bergmann’s advocacy for dual functionality in projects to Junya Ishigami’s boundary-defying spatial designs, the conference showcased a spectrum of innovative approaches to architecture. Ishigami’s philosophy of redefining spatial boundaries and embracing versatility resonated with the audience, encouraging architects to embrace risk and adventure in their designs, even if only by a small margin.
The Path Towards Sustainable and Inclusive Architecture
The insights gathered from the NZIA In:Situ Conference serve as guides in our pursuit of sustainable and inclusive architecture. By embracing local context, fostering trust in craftsmanship, and prioritising environmental stewardship, we can embark on a transformative journey towards creating spaces that not only inspire but also nurture communities and safeguard our planet.
Special thanks to the directors and Pacific Environments for facilitating our attendance, enabling us to exchange insights and experiences with colleagues in an environment removed from the pressures of daily work routines. Undoubtedly, the experience was both enriching and worthwhile.
