Last week Pacific Environments’ Grant Neill, Managing Director, and Caroline Peacocke, Practice Manager, attended the Institute of Directors 2024 Leadership Conference, held in the beautiful Te Pae Convention Centre in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
The event, attended more than 700 individuals and featuring esteemed speakers, provided an unparalleled opportunity for exposure to governance principles. With an impressive lineup of speakers, this conference promised to be a game-changer – and it certainly delivered. For Caroline in particular, it was a journey of immense learning, and she’s already weaving this learning into her everyday professional life.
With 51 speakers over the 2 days, it was an intensive event, Caroline found the breakout sessions of value. “Taking the ‘bored’ out of the board meetings: 10 tips for better board meetings” has provided a whole list of creative and practical ideas to bring back into the office.
Particularly impactful was Dr. Reuben Abraham’s session on lessons from the world’s fastest-growing economy, highlighting India’s Unified Payments Interface system. This system, characterised by its real-time, seamless, and fee-free transactions, contrasts sharply with New Zealand’s current transaction fees, prompting reflection on potential disruptions to our local banking landscape.
The discussions on artificial intelligence were equally riveting, already igniting passionate conversations within the Pacific Environments team.
For Caroline, one of the most impactful takeaways was the profound realisation of the responsibilities borne by Directors of New Zealand companies. And the other being the importance of translating overarching governance discussions and insights into tangible, day-to-day practices, fostering inclusivity and effective communication within the office environment.
The learnings taken out of the event reinforced Caroline’s belief that “a successful business is built on the value you add, not what your job is”.
