Originating as an eight-classroom block commissioned by the Ministry of Education, this project has developed into a symbol of innovative design and educational advancement.
Initially addressing spatial limitations, Pacific Environments, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, undertook a comprehensive master planning endeavor, establishing the groundwork for a holistic approach to site development. The outcome from this was a twelve-classroom block with adjacent car park behind.
Central to this collaborative effort were the input of staff, students, and the wider community, who actively contributed to shaping the project’s trajectory. Through immersive design workshops, their ideas merged with architectural innovation, resulting in a building that not only meets functional needs but also embodies the values of the school community.
Local graphic designer, Aaron Hall, incorporated distinctive waharoa patterns into the project’s pre-cast exterior panels, reflecting the community’s identity and heritage while engaging the school, community, and Iwi in the design process.
The building now offers a variety of learning spaces tailored to different teaching styles and student preferences. Prioritising longevity and sustainability, durable materials and thoughtful design features ensure the building’s resilience for future generations.
As one moves through the sunlit corridors and spacious classrooms, they are enveloped in an environment designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and a connection to the outdoors. Natural ventilation, ample daylight, and expansive outdoor areas blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, promoting holistic learning experiences.
Despite encountering challenges such as adverse ground conditions and disruptions due to Covid lockdowns, the project persevered, reaching completion and welcoming students in November 2023. The community came together for the project’s grand unveiling, celebrating a collective vision for the future.
