Pacific Environments has signed up with Toitū Envirocare’s ‘Carobonzero’ assessment and certification programme.
Why Carbon Net Zero?
As founding signatories to Architects Declare NZ, Pacific Environments are committed to the continuous improvement of our sustainable working practices. Achieving carbon net zero is a natural progression of this commitment. A first-hand understanding of the certification process enables us to exchange insights and learnings with clients who may also be working towards certification.
How we are reducing our carbon emissions
As a business we are always looking for ways to further reduce our carbon emissions. Last year we signed up to the City Hop car hire service. Now, as well as the company hybrid vehicle, staff can book an electric car from City Hop to carry out client and site visits. Fleet reduction is a key step in reducing our carbon footprint. The average Cityhop user saves 392 KG CO2-e every year, when compared to commuting in a privately owned vehicle.
Increasingly our business is moving online for client and project meetings, whilst face to face catch-ups are always best, the various platforms available for online meetings offer a really viable alternative. Additionally, the ability for staff to work from home helps cut down commute times and carbon emissions, a win-win for staff and the environment. Our ongoing involvement with the Trees for Survival programme is a great way for staff to participate in planting days; early steps in the vital regeneration of our carbon sequestering native forests. We also actively promote waste reduction, providing containers and go-cups for staff to use instead of takeaway cups and containers. With a growing team, we have also recently upgraded the worm-farm ‘Hungry Bin’ to a larger size composting unit. From large gestures to small, every action counts.
More about Toitū
Certification from Toitū Envirocare is proof that businesses are taking action on climate change. The programme ensures business accurately measure and work to reduce their greenhouse gas footprint over time. Toitū will help Pacific Environments to identify the data we need to measure our greenhouse gas inventory and independently audit our result. We are aiming to gain certification in early 2022. Once certified Pacific Environments will be listed on the Toitū membership database, with annual audits required to maintain our membership.
Pacific Environments chose Toitū as our Carbon assessment partner due to the integrity and clear structure of their assessment guidance service. “Toitū carbonreduce, Toitū carbonzero and Toitū enviromark certifications meet and exceed the requirements of ISO standards and ensure consistent and comprehensive reporting, benchmarking and management under international best practice.” www.toitū.co.nz
